ORLAND — Frederick L. 'Fred' Kain, age 89, of Orland, Indiana, passed away at Northern Lakes Nursing Center, Angola, Ind., on Tuesday, February 25, 2014. He was born on May 6, 1924, at Nevada Mills, in Steuben County, Ind., the son of Cleo H. and Josephine (Webb) Kain. He married Mary E. Green on February 27, 1944, at the Orland United Methodist Church. Fred was a 1942 graduate of Orland High School, and he played baseball during his high school years, and continued playing for many years, playing for traveling county and town baseball teams. He was a left handed pitcher. He was a lifetime farmer, and also worked for Douglas Corporation in Bronson, Michigan, and Dana-Weatherhead in Angola, Ind., and formerly was a volunteer fireman for the Orland Fire Department. Fred enjoyed farming, fishing, playing golf, and loved his family. He had raised quarter horses for many years, and was a member of the Pokagon Saddle Club. He was a member of the Orland United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mary E. Kain of Orland, Ind.; a daughter, Patti (Ronald) Waite of Angola, Ind.; a son. Martin (Lisa) Kain of Angola, Ind.; six grandchildren, Ryan and Becky Waite, Raelyn (Waite) and Tim Moore, Jenifer (Kain) and Tim Strater, Justin Pitchellis, Martin Kain II and Mitch Kain; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three children, Kenneth, Kathryn Ann and Curtis Kain; a sister, Margaret Jacob; and four brothers, Glen, John, Don and Cleon Kain. Calling hours will be from 4-8 p.m. today at Beams Funeral Home in Fremont. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, February 28, 2014, at Beams Funeral Home, Fremont, Ind., with the Rev. Duane Stidham officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Greenlawn Cemetery, Orland, Ind. Memorials are to the Orland Fire and Rescue or Orland Methodist Church in Orland, Ind.
