A Life Well Lived

Florence Hubbard Lloyd passed away peacefully on January 28, 2021 at Beaumont Retirement Community, Bryn Mawr, PA after a brief battle with Covid and a longer, valiant battle with Alzheimer’s. Despite the challenges associated with Alzheimer’s, Florry kept her good humor, warmth and loving nature until the end.

Florry was born on October 12, 1937 in Boston, Massachusetts to Dr. John Perry Hubbard and Dorothy Allen Hubbard. Her family moved to Philadelphia and Florry enrolled in Baldwin, graduating with dear friends of the class of 1955. She went on to graduate from Vassar where she studied piano and English and relished participating in a guitar and close-harmony singing group. In 1961, Florry married John S. Lloyd, a long time friend. After John’s tour in the Navy, they settled in Philadelphia. She earned a master’s in Early Childhood Development from Bryn Mawr College.

Lifelong, Florry channeled music to deepen connections with her family and community. She filled family car trips and their Society Hill homes of 30 years with music and song, cheered cousins and neighbors by leading folk songs and Christmas carols on the piano or guitar, and her strong soprano voice was as clear as a bell many Sundays at St. Peter’s church. Even as her Alzheimer’s progressed she was able to command attention and spark awe with her prowess on the piano.

Florry was exceptionally devoted to her family. One of her greatest joys was gathering as many family members together as possible. Each summer, she and John delighted in gathering all four of their children and their nine grandchildren and encouraged their strong bonds. She is survived and celebrated by John S. Lloyd, her husband of 59 years; her children, their spouses and their children: Dr. John Lloyd (Jack), Dr. Sheila Combs and Robert, Will and Maya Lloyd; Maria Lloyd (Molly), Dan and Anne Reardon; Dr. Rebecca (Becky), David, Nicholas and Dawson DesRoches; and Thomas Lloyd (Tom), Alicia Segado, Pablo, Alexander and Sophia Lloyd; and her dear older sister Elizabeth Hubbard Edgerton.

Truly Florry manifested the power of love. She had a longstanding relationship with St. Peter’s Church and her love was guided by her deep Christian faith. A zoom service was held by St. Peter's church on February 6, 2021. The internment will be at St. Peter’s at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to St. Peter’s Church, stpetersphila.org, 313 Pine Street, Philadelphia.
