This obituary is administered by:
Evelyn (Polkinghorne) HarmonFebruary 25, 1937July 14, 2017Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and dear friend to many passed away on July 14, 2017. She was 80. Evelyn was born on February 25, 1937 at Humboldt General Hospital in Winnemucca, Nevada to Walter and Alma (Nelson) Polkinghorne, where she lived her entire life as a third generation Nevadan. Evelyn lived for several years on the family ranch in Pumpernickel Valley before becoming a "town girl", where she graduated as valedictorian of the class of 1955 from Humboldt County High School. From there she attended, on a full academic scholarship, and graduated from Stanford University in 1959 with a major in political science and a minor in Chinese. She passed the written civil service exam in 1959, but was discouraged as a female from taking the oral examination, as the examination board made it difficult for women applicants, and since she was returning to Winnemucca to get married. She happily changed her name from Polkinghorne to Harmon when she married Leslie (Peanut) on January 24, 1960, as she had always said that she was the last one to finish filling out forms with all of the "Winnemuccas" and "Polkinghornes". Evelyn maintained a strong interest in national and state and local politics until the end of her days. At any given point in time she could name all 100 senators, including states and political party affiliations that they represented. Locally, she was elected for 7 terms (28 years) as the Humboldt County Recorder Auditor and for 30 years served as the Humboldt County Budget officer. Other organizations, interests and activities included Humboldt County Library Board, County Fiscal Officers Association (including past president), PEO Chapter L, Winnemucca Literary Club, Eastern Star Lodge #6, Humboldt County Republican Women (including Past President), Past Treasurer of Senior Center, Girl Scout Leader and Rainbow Girls. She was very active in the Winnemucca United Methodist Church where she was raised and where she was married, holding several positions there throughout her life, including treasurer and Sunday school teacher.Evelyn was a voracious reader and was always doing crossword puzzles - in pen, no less. But she always had time to follow her teams - she was a passionate San Francisco Giants and San Francisco 49er fan, always rooting and cheering them on. Preceding her in death were her sisters Gladys Polkinghorne, Margaret Polkinghorne and Leora (Polkinghorne) Ducker.Evelyn is survived by her husband of 57 years, Peanut Harmon, her brothers James Polkinghorne (Marge) of Elko, Nevada, and Bert Polkinghorne (Pauline) of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, her sister Deanna (Polkinghorne) Sullivan (Mike) of Vancouver, Washington as well as her two children Donna Harmon Laubscher (Joel) of Tempe, Arizona and Michael R Harmon (Joanna) of Reno, Nevada, and her grandchildren, Katherine Laubscher, Alexis Laubscher, Madison Harmon, McKenna Harmon, Taylor Tatro and Hanna Tatro. Evelyn is also survived by her sister-in-law Pauline (Griffiths) Harmon of Winnemucca and various nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.Viewing will be held on Monday, July 24, 2017 at Sonoma Funeral Home, 47 W First Street, Winnemucca, from 5 - 7 pm.
