Engstrom, Eugene R. "Gene"Eugene R. "Gene" Engstrom, 90, Green Bay died Saturday, December 10, 2016. He was born on February 25, 1926, in Ironwood, MI to Herman and Viola (Korpela) Engstrom.Gene attended Lance Grade School and later graduated from Luther L. Wright High School, Class of 1944. Following graduation Gene joined the U.S. Army and served in the African/European Theater of World War II. He was stationed in Italy until 1946. During the war, he participated in the Battle of Po Valley from April 13, 1945 to May 8, 1945, and the Battle of North Apennines, from January 25, 1945 to April, 4, 1945, both with the 751st Tank Battalion. He received the European/African/Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and Ribbon, the Army of Occupation Medal, two Bronze Service Stars, the Army Commendation Ribbon, and one Overseas Bar.On June 21, 1950, Gene married Irene Delores Gonnering at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Wrightstown. He worked as a control operator for Wisconsin Public Service Pulliam Plant for 38 ½ years retiring at 62 years old. Gene was a proud member of The International Union of Operating Engineers, the Veteran of Foreign Wars, The Catholic Knights, and was a member of Annunciation Parish. He was an avid bowler and golfer. Gene was also an avid Packer fan and had attended the Ice Bowl. He loved spending time outdoors hunting, fishing, camping, spending time at the cottage, traveling the Unites States, including Alaska and Hawaii, and taking Caribbean cruises and a trip to Italy. He is survived by his wife, Irene; his children, Bob Engstrom, Kathy Engstrom; grandchildren, Robert M. Engstrom, Jason M. (Nicole) Engstrom; great-grandchildren, Jennesa, Bailey, Breanna; step-great-grandchildren, Abbey, Cameron, and Carson; sister and brother-in-law, Audrey and Leonard Fualey; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.Gene was preceded in death by a daughter, Diane Engstrom; his parents; aunts and uncles, Inga and Louis Stephans, Wally and Bell Engstrom, Doris and Raymond Carlson, Charlotte and Orville Tex; Roy and Blanche Engstrom, Matt Korpela, Elsie Mackie, and Elma Caylor; and many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.Friends may call at Blaney Funeral Home, 1521 Shawano Avenue, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday. A Parish Wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday. Friends may also call at Annunciation Catholic Church, 410 Gray Street, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday. The Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church with Rev. Donald Everts officiating. Entombment will be in Allouez Catholic Mausoleum.
