Douglas E. Weathers Obituary

Nov 29, 1954 - Jan 24, 2016

This obituary is administered by:
The Honorable DOUGLAS E. WEATHERS, Ret., passed away on October 24, 2016 from early onset Alzheimer's at age 61. Doug was born on November 29, 1954, in Loma Linda, CA to William and Dorothy Weathers. At the age of five, Doug moved with his family to Riverside and remained a lifelong resident. Doug attended La Sierra Academy and upon graduating from high school, studied at UCR and La Sierra University in the mid-70's. Before he completed an undergraduate degree, Doug enrolled in the accelerated J.D. Program at Western State University College of Law in 1978, where he completed his law degree and was admitted to the bar on December 16, 1980. Doug was an associate attorney at the San Bernardino law firm of Rose, Klein and Marias from 1980-84. During this time he met his future wife, Theresa, at a deposition, where she was the court reporter. This was a romance meant to be and within 9 months, they had married and started their lives together. With Theresa's support, Doug was able to practice law, work and study hard and he became an eminent trial attorney. In 1985 and 1988, respectively, Doug and Theresa welcomed a son, Clayton and daughter, Emily into their home. It was well-known among family and friends that Doug adored his children and loved being a father. In 1984, the law partnership of Fisher, Weathers & Geeting was formed with fellow attorneys, Mac Fisher and Steve Geeting. Doug's career soared and he became active in many legal organizations, such as Barristers, the Consumer Attorneys of California, the Los Angeles Trial Lawyers Association, the Riverside and San Bernardino County Bar Associations, the American Inns of Court and the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA). When Fisher, Weathers & Geeting dissolved, Doug joined Peach & Weathers, the law firm of his brother, Bill Weathers and childhood friend, Tim Peach, in 2003. While there and with the encouragement from Theresa and his law partners, Doug submitted an application for a judicial appointment, an idea he had only fleetingly considered in the past. Shortly after he applied, the appointment was confirmed and Doug was enrobed as a Riverside County Superior Court Judge on January 27, 2006. Being a judge fit Doug's temperament and he never spoke about his job without commenting that he had "the best job in the world." It was important to him that he serve the public and lawyers appearing before him with utmost professionalism and civility, something he had promoted when mentoring young lawyers in the associations to which he belonged. Doug was equally known and admired for the true friendships he had cultivated throughout child and adulthood. He was quick-witted, the life of the party and a loyal friend. Doug leaves behind his beloved wife, Theresa, who devoted herself lovingly to his care after he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2010 and the devastating effects of this debilitating disease. Doug also leaves his son, Clayton, daughter Emily and her partner Jennifer, along with his brother, Bill Weathers and wife, Terry, as well as several nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service is planned for family and friends at 2:00 p.m. at the Mission Inn on Saturday, November 12, followed by a reception at the Historic County Courthouse. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Douglas Weathers to the would be greatly appreciated: www.alz.org/donate.
