Rowland, Dorothy Maxine (Hill) 83, of Sun City, AZ peacefully passed away 7-14-17 surrounded by loving family and friends. Dorothy was born on 5-18-34 in Hays, KS to John Le Roy Hill and Bertha Mary Beatrice (Burson) Hill. She graduated from Hutchinson High School in Hutchinson, KS in 1952. There she met "The Love of Her Life", Harvey "Harv" Lester Rowland Jr. They married on 4-6-56 and were wed for fifty-nine years. Soon after marriage they opened their first furniture store in Hutchinson, KS eventually relocating to Great Bend, KS where they opened their second location named "Harv's Furniture." Dorothy loved staying at home with her three small children. As they grew older Dorothy became more involved in the family furniture business. Her prior work experience in advertising with Sears led her to develop and manage all ads and promotions for "Harv's Furniture." Dorothy's new found talent was buying and design co-ordination. She purchased accessories and statement pieces for the business and developed an "Interior Decorating Department" adding new customers and revenue. In 1978 they sold their businesses and retired to the sunny skies and golf courses of Sun City, AZ, Dorothy had a love for travel and was hired by a travel agency that eventually turned into a twenty-five-year career. Dorothy developed travel itineraries and escorted these exciting trips. Her experiences were over thirty-five cruises and train trips to Grand Hotels across Europe. She had a special love of Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy. When she returned home, she loved to share her amazing travel stories regarding international customs, exotic recipes and beautiful meaningful gifts with family and friends. Harv was her "Life's Compass" and supported her desire to participate and document her "Travel Adventures!" Dorothy inherited a passion for food and cooking from her mother who specialized in everything, while Dorothy studied the Art of Bread Making and was grinding her own wheat for her famous homemade bread up until the end of her life. In 2005, Dorothy and Harv changed travel gears and bought an RV, joined the Sun City RV Club and traveled throughout the continental US. The RV Club was such a joy for Harv and Dorothy, and to get away from the heat they would spend the summers in the Northwest, the coast of Oregon up to Olympia, WA where her son Craig Alan and wife Andrea (Scheatzle) Rowland are raising their Favorite eleven grandchildren. Dorothy was a very hands-on mother of three and a loving Grandmother to her eleven, but she was always so impressed and proud with the skill and success Craig and Andrea had achieved with their talented, exceptional family.
