Dorothy Ann Dashiell Smith AGE: 90 • Mountain LakesDorothy Ann Dashiell Smith, better known as Dot Smith, died peacefully on October 23, 2017. She was born on June 13, 1927, in New York City to John Frederick Dashiell and Clara Sylvia Dashiell. She and her older brother, Frederick (Dick), were raised in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. In 1947, she was graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where her father was Chair of the Psychology Department. She married Adrian (Duke) Smith in 1947, and they lived in California, Pennsylvania and New York before finally settling in Mountain Lakes in 1961. Dot had career aspirations early in life. The arrival of five children over sixteen years temporarily delayed those ambitions, but did not slow her down. She spurred her children to appreciate literature, travel, and theater, and shared her love of the history and art of ancient Greece. She kept learning throughout her life, traveled widely across five continents and was a feminist before feminism became mainstream. Although a southerner at heart and slightly in accent, she remained fascinated by New York City and never tired of guiding her children and friends to the city's vibrant sites and events.Once her youngest child was in school, she earned a degree in interior design from The New School, became an interior decorator, and enjoyed working at Bograd's Fine Furniture. Soon her home was filled with wallpaper and fabric samples. She could identify the provenance of fine furniture at a glance and lectured on the subject at Chautauqua, New York.Her husband, Duke, predeceased her in 2008; she is survived by five children and their spouses: Adrienne Smith and Mark Gluesing of Needham, MA, Christopher Dashiell (Smith) and Elizabeth Newton of Tucson, AZ, DeWitt and Lisa Smith of Wyckoff, NJ, Jennifer Smith-Brock and Stephen Brock of Cape Elizabeth, ME, and Devin and Anna Smith of Needham, MA. She was Mormor to her eight grandchildren: Adrienne, Walker and Tyler Smith, Andrew Gluesing, Carter and Sylvia Brock, and Owen and Graham Smith.A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at the Community Church of Mountain Lakes, 48 Briarcliff Rd, Mountain Lakes, NJ, with a reception to follow at the Mountain Lakes Club, 18 Lake Dr, Mountain Lakes, NJ.
