Chism, Doris,94, passed away peacefully at Hosparus on April 11, 2017.She was a Louisville native and was born on July 2, 1922, to Clarence and Martha Brentzel; who preceded her in death along with her only sibling, a brother, Mike ("Bud") Brentzel. James Alonzo Chism, her loving and devoted husband of nearly 50 years, also preceded her in death on Christmas Day, 1997. Doris and Jim met when she was a young nurse who cared for him as a former World War II patient. This began their enduring love story of over 70 years.Doris was a faith-filled woman who always put God, faith, and family above all else. She really enjoyed volunteering countless hours at all of the churches where she was a member; including St. John Evangelical Church, Southeast Christian Church, and Hikes Point Christian church. Doris and Jim loved devoting every Wednesday at Southeast Christian Church (on Hikes Lane), preparing and serving the weekly dinners. They met many new friends there when they joined in 1982, and enjoyed faith and fellowship with all. She also sang in her church choirs, and participated in numerous Bible studies and women's groups. Doris loved being a homemaker and was very gifted in sewing, knitting, and crocheting. She made many beautiful quilts, blankets, and wall-hangings that her family still dearly treasures. Cooking for family and friends was always a passion of hers, and everyone always loved her famous German potato salad and Christmas springerlees. In her younger years, Doris worked for a family business; Likins Driving School, as a secretary and enjoyed writing envelopes in her later years for DNR, as she liked to keep her hands "busy." Doris is survived by her only son, Gary (Vicky), two granddaughters; Jessica Chism Vivona (Jason), and Amanda Evelyn Chism; along with two beautiful great-grandsons; Joshua and Austin. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins, whom she also loved dearly.Visitation for Doris will be from 3- 8 p.m. on Friday, April 14, 2017 at Arch L. Heady at Resthaven 4400 Bardstown Road; with the funeral service Saturday, April 15, 2017 at 10 a.m. with interment to follow at Resthaven Memorial Park Resthaven. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Hosparus or her church, Hikes Point Christian Church. The family wishes to express their gratitude to all of the caregivers and staff at Countryside Meadows, in La Grange, Kentucky and Hosparus of Louisville.
