Donald Dean WachtelDonald Dean Wachtel, age 96, of rural Coshocton County, passed away on Friday, April 28, 2017. He was born on November 19, 1920 in Wooster, Ohio, to the late Harry and Pleasie (Hostettler) Wachtel. Don graduated from West High School, Cleveland, Ohio. A World War II veteran, Don served in the U.S. Army Air Corps, 40th Photo Recon Squadron, stationed in India and Burma. Don married Hazel Schlarb on October 17, 1954. He was a small business owner in Cleveland before relocating his family to rural Coshocton County in 1968, where he retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1984. Don was a member of Keene United Methodist Church and a past member of Keene Grange. He enjoyed golf, softball, walking and grounds keeping on his seven acres, reading, Big Band music, travelling and drawing. Don was a lifelong sports fan, especially of the Cleveland Indians. Don is survived by his children Fred (Sharon) Wachtel, Ann (Dan) McDowell, Mary Dale (John) Wachtel Starkie, Lori Wachtel, special friend Harley, grandchildren Doug, Steven, Sophia and Wyatt, and numerous nephews and nieces. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Hazel who passed away in 2009, brother, Richard, and sister, Doreen. Calling hours will be held on Monday, May 1, 2017 from 5:00 to 7:00pm at Given-Dawson-Paisley Funeral Home and from 10:00 am to 11:00 am on Tuesday. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 2, 2017 at 11:00 am at the funeral home with Reverend Dan Loomis officiating. Burial will follow at Coshocton County Memory Gardens with the Coshocton County Honor Guard performing military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Keene United Methodist Church, envelopes will be provided at the funeral home. The family would like to give a special thank you to Clara Keim, Linda Taylor, and Tracy Baumgarder who have all helped care for Don in recent years.
