SHAWANO, Wis. — Derek T. Stempa, age 30, of Shawano, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, May 26, 2015, in a construction accident. Derek was born on June 16, 1984 in Shawano, the son of James F. and Kathy (Bonack) Stempa. Derek lived in Shawano most of his life and is a graduate of Shawano High School and attended Fox Valley Tech and MATC. Derek served our country in the Army National Guard as a cannon crew member in Kuwait and was honorably discharged in 2006. On September 5, 2009, in Kendallville, Indiana, he was united in marriage to Heather Mishler. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shawano. Derek enjoyed playing cards, shooting guns, hunting, playing softball, bean bag tossing, and being in the outdoors, and was an avid Packer fan. Most of all, Derek loved spending time with his family. Derek is survived by his wife, Heather; their children, River and Brynlee; his parents, James and Kathy Stempa; his brothers, Brett (Darcy) Stempa of Shawano, Chris (Denise) Stempa of Appleton, and Jim (Sherri) Stempa of Rudolph; father-in-law, Randy (Deb) Mishler of White Pigeon, Michigan; mother-in-law, Marcy (John) Yuska of Kendallville, Indiana; grandmother-in-law, Darlene Geyer of Howe, Indiana; as well as numerous other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Frank and Jane Stempa, and William and Pat Bonack. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 2, 2015, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shawano with the Rev. Luke Ferris officiating. Military rites will be conducted at the church by the Shawano American Legion. Visitation will be held from 3-8-p.m. on Monday, June 1, 2015, at Swedberg Funeral Home in Shawano and again on Tuesday at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
