Derek James Toppa, 31, of Oscoda, formerly of Westland, passed away on Tuesday, April 22, 2014. He was born on Jan. 9, 1983 in Detroit to Arthur Jr. and Tracey Toppa (nee Salvas). Derek graduated from Livonia Franklin High School and went on to graduate from Michigan Career and Technical Institute in 2007. He took a special interest in martial arts and earned his black belt in Olympian Chung Do Kwan and International Tae Kwon Do. Derek was an artist and specialized in Anime Art and enjoyed attending Comic-Con. He was also a proud camp counselor at an epilepsy camp in Michigan called Camp Discovery. Derek is survived by his fiancée, Stephanie Penrod; Stephanie's children, Hannah, Jordan, Nathan and Gabriel; his parents, Arthur Jr. and Tracey Toppa; sister, Dawnne Toppa; and grandparents, Arthur and Anna Toppa and Patricia Salvas and late John (Jack) Salvas. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 26 at 11 a.m. (in state at 10 a.m.) at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oscoda.
