Dean Orlin Minnick of Oscoda passed away peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012 at Tendercare Nursing Home in Tawas City, age 79 years. Dean was born on Sept. 19, 1933 in Marshall, Minn.to Donald and Beulah (Bamford) Minnick. He graduated from Western High School in Detroit and then he enlisted with the United States Navy, where he proudly served our country during the Korean Conflict for four years, stationed mostly in Japan. Dean later went to college at Wayne State University in Detroit where he earned a four-year bachelor's degree studying to be a packaging engineer. After college graduation, Dean became a successful business owner and entrepreneur. He owned and operated the Motor City Container Company in Romulus for many years and also started and operated two restaurants, Minnick's Post Paddock in Milford and Minnick's Bit and Bridle in Howell. Those who knew Dean will always remember how he truly enjoyed fishing and playing cards. When he lived in the surrounding Detroit area, Dean was very active with horse breeding and racing. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 33 years, Suzanne M. Minnick of Oscoda; five loving children, Lori (Jim) Carro of Waterford, Mark Minnick of Farmington, Deana (Gordy) LaFontaine of Kalkaska, Susan (Robert) Smigielski of Waterford, and Chontrese (Chris) Hayes of Oscoda; nine grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and many dear friends. Dean was preceded in death by his first born son, Rick Minnick; and his parents, Donald and Beulah Minnick. Per his wishes, cremation has taken place and a celebration of his life with military honors will be held at East Tawas Assembly of God Church on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 11 a.m. with Pastor James Westheim officiating.
