David JeffreyMatthews1953-2017David Jeffrey Matthews was born on March 26, 1953 in the old Sacred Heart Hospital, Pensacola, FL. He lost his long battle with cancer on August 4, 2017. David's father was Shellie Webb Matthews and his mother was Dorothy Jean Campbell, both from the Crestview, FL area. David resided most of his life in Pensacola, FL. He attended Navy Point Elementary, Bellview Middle School, Escambia High School (the Rebels) and Pensacola Junior College for his schooling.After graduation, David joined the
Army and was eventually deployed to Vietnam. After several years and a helicopter crash, he returned to Pensacola, where he went to work for the Department of Defense (DOD) as a
fireman. After he left DOD, he worked for Southern Erectors doing construction work and welding. He was eventually hired at NAS Pensacola where he worked with sheet metal and repairing planes and helicopters. Later on he worked for the Housing Office at NAS Pensacola and NAS Whiting Field. Eventually he moved to the Asbestos Abatement team back at NAS Pensacola. David got a job with Coastal Security and eventually retired from there. In his spare time, David became the Cub Scout Master of Troop 626 in Pensacola with his two sons. David began to find an interest in his family history and joined Sons of the American Revolution. He held several offices and was instrumental in acquiring the Minute Man Statue for the Veteran's Park in Downtown Pensacola. He was an outdoorsman and loved to hunt and fish. He also enjoyed watching NASCAR.Most of all, David loved his family. He and his wife have two sons. Both are married and have children. Ryan married Kirsten Rinke and they have two children, a son named James Thomas and a daughter named Brittney Rose. Nathan married Melissa Camp and they have a son named William David. Nathan has a son named Dylan Rogers from a previous marriage.The entire Matthews family wants to thank Dr. David Mann, his associates, staff and the infusion nurses for all the kindness and help. We also want to thank the great healthcare aids that came to our home. Last of all, we appreciate all the help David received from the Covenant Care Hospice nurses that took such great care of him in his final days.Visitation will be at Oak Lawn Funeral Home from 10:30 am to 11:30 am on Monday, August 14, 2017, immediately followed by a funeral service at 11:30.
