Smith, David C. EAST GREENBUSH With a very heavy heart, the Smith family announces the unexpected passing of David C. Smith on Friday, December 9, 2016 at St. Peter's Hospital. David was born on September 11, 1940 in Amsterdam. He was a graduate of Wilbur Lynch High School in Amsterdam and the State University of New York at Cobleskill, where he majored in business and finance. While at Cobleskill, Dave met a girl named Mary, the love of his life. Dave and Mary were married on November 19, 1961. Dave served his country as a member of the U.S. Army National Guard of New York as a qualified sharpshooter from 1961-1967 achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant E6 - 1st Battalion 210th Armor Division. Dave was also a dedicated volunteer for the past 11 years with the CoNSERNS-U Food Pantry in Rensselaer. Dave's greatest joy was spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. He enjoyed walks with Mary, working in his yard and reading Tom Clancy novels. He loved the Adirondack Mountains, especially Brant Lake where he and his family spent many wonderful summers. Dave also enjoyed spending time at his favorite spot at the ocean shore in Gloucester, Mass. Dave was a caring, kind, gentle and remarkable man in many ways. He was always thinking of others and always willing to lend a hand. He was a wonderful husband, father and Poppy. A man of high standards, Dave taught his sons the true meaning of integrity and honesty. A man to look up to and admire.
