Mr. Daniel Allen Williams age 81 of Wallace, NC, left this earthly life for his eternal life on Thursday, January 22, 2015 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, NC. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at Wallace First Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Dr. J. Robert Kretzu. Special speakers will be Rev. Brad Carter, Susan Carter, Sheriff Blake Wallace and Bobby Ward. Burial will follow at Riverview Memorial Park in Watha, NC. There will be a visitation on Friday, January 23, 2015 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Padgett Funeral Home in Wallace, NC.Mr. Williams was one of a very large family of 16 which included 3 sets of twins. Surviving siblings are Julia Quinn of Kinston, NC, Jenny Taylor of Goldsboro, NC and Patricia "Trit" Cole of Potters Hill, NC.He is predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Molly Jenine Baysden Williams; and a grandson, Tyde "Ty" Daniel Henderson. Allen is survived by two daughters, Melony W. Henderson and husband David of Wallace, NC and Tena W. Roberts and husband Ken of Wallace, NC; one son, Allen Todd Williams and wife Dionne of Wilson, NC; four grandchildren, Andrew Todd Williams, Jenna Blair Henderson, Molly Elizabeth Roberts and Beasley Rebecca Roberts; and one great-granddaughter, Rylan Danielle Henderson. Allen was born on February 26, 1933 in Duplin County, NC, and was the son of the late Andrew Pickett Williams and Laura Francis Griffin Williams. Mr. Williams served in the Army from 1953-1955, including 18 months in the Korean War. He began his retail career with the Piggly Wiggly grocery chain as a stock clerk in Richlands in 1957. In 1958, he was promoted to produce manager and in 1960 to assistant manager. In 1962, he became the manager of the Piggly Wiggly in Wallace, NC. He was a leading and progressive businessman with a keen interest in seeing that his customers were given exceptional personalized service. His friendliness and genuine interest made him one of the most popular and well liked business men in Duplin County. An active supporter of civic affairs with time and money, he played a vital role as a member of the Wallace Recreation Commission, where he helped to begin little league baseball. Organizations include past President of C.W. Dobbins Elementary School, Wallace-Rose Hill Athletic Boosters Club, two terms as President of the Wallace Chamber of Commerce, and Co-chairman of the Wallace Christmas Parade. He was voted Man of the Year in 1973 by the VFW. He was also a 32nd degree Mason and an officer of the Masonic Lodge and President and Vice-President of the Duplin County Shrine Club. He was on the Board of Trustees at James Sprunt Community College in Kenansville and Branch Banking and Trust in Wallace. He was a member of the Wallace United Methodist Church. He was an avid supporter of athletics for all teams, but his heart belonged primarily to his beloved Bulldogs of Wallace Rose Hill. You could hear his voice on Friday nights as he was the commentator for the Wallace Rose Hill Bulldogs football team on the local radio station, WZKB, He served as assistant Baseball coach under Gary Lewis and assistant Softball coach under his daughter, Melony at Wallace Rose Hill. He was known as the original "Mr. Bulldog." He was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and the UNC Tarheels. In 1999, he was awarded the prestigious honor of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine given by the State of NC. In February 2005, he was the recipient of the Harry "Toots" Carlton award. Because of all his hard work and dedication to the local sports programs, the gym inside the Campbell Center in Wallace is named the Allen Williams family gym and the softball field at Wallace Rose Hill is named the Allen Williams softball field. His greatest accomplishment was his family. He was a loving, supportive and dedicated husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
