DAVID LEE HOSKINS Obituary
Nov 22, 1945 - Sep 30, 2016
This obituary is administered by:
David Lee Hoskins was born on November 22, 1945 to Willis and Mildred Hoskins in Brawley, CA. He was one of the last babies delivered by Dr. Augustus H. Foster prior to the opening of Pioneers Memorial Hospital. David was the 2nd of the four Hoskins children including Kenneth, Clifford and baby sister Ruth whose family farm still resides on the outskirts of Westmorland, CA on a road that bears their name. David attended Westmorland Elementary School and graduated from Brawley Union High School in 1963. He was a member of Brawley FFA and played football. This was the 1960's and few teenagers had cars, so David would hitchhike home to Westmorland every evening after football practice. David was a proud Wildcat and lifelong supporter of the Brawley FFA. He thoroughly enjoyed cowboying and helping his brother, Kenneth, with his pasture cattle operation (for which Kenneth paid him in hamburger meat). He also enjoyed watching his children participate in 4-H, FFA and sports. Every year would find him and his wife, Mary Helen at the Midwinter Fair Auction bidding and supporting local youth with their livestock projects. David and Mary Helen would think nothing of traveling all over Imperial and San Diego Counties to cheer on their grandchildren in their many sporting activities. After high school David married Joyce Anne Tramel and had 2 children, David Todd and Chy Leighanne. He began his 51 yearlong career with Jordan Implement Company, where he began by washing tractors and ended as Product Support Manager. He was widely regarded in the farming community for his ability to fix any tractor, sometimes his only tool being a crescent wrench. After his wife Joyce Anne passed away, David attended his high school reunion where he became reacquainted with Mary Helen Taffolla. David and Mary Helen were married in 1994 and the immediately and unequivocally combined their families to include Mary Helen's children Benny, Denisia, Eric, and Roman Andres. Thus began a special and happy time in their lives as all their children married and eventually made David, "Papa" to 20 grandchildren. David was a member and elder of the Westmorland Community Presbyterian church, the Stockmen's Club of Imperial Valley, the Brawley FFA Advisory Board, and coached Brawley Little League Baseball. Three years ago David was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. David fought a valiant battle and like the cowboy he was, he never complained. David passed away in his home on Sunset Drive with his beloved wife, Mary Helen at his side on September 30, 2016. David was preceded in death by his first wife, Joyce Anne; his parents, Willis and Mildred Hoskins; his brother-in-law, J.O Tramel and his beloved mother-in-law, "Nanny" Tramel. He is survived by his wife, Mary Helen; his son, Todd Hoskins; daughter and son-in-law, Alex and Chy Gill; Mary Helen's children (whom he considered his own), Benny and Tamara Andres, Denisia and Jim Chatfield, Eric and Heather Andres, and Roman and Jena Andres; grandchildren, Colby, Taylor, Hagan, Madison, Athen, Dilynn, Abram, Elena, Denisia, Sevilla, Solana, Jimmy, Alyssa, Layla, Mateo, Santana, John Roman, Isabella, Lola and Luke; siblings, Kenneth and wife Sandi Hoskins, Clifford Hoskins and Ruth Hoskins and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. He thoroughly enjoyed working at Jordan Implement Company and if he could he would still be walking in the door first thing in the morning! The family would like to express sincere thanks to Steve Ellison and Jordan Implement Company for all their support, love and assistance they gave him the past three years. A celebration of life service will be held at 9 a.m. on October 14, 2016 at Frye Chapel and Mortuary in Brawley. Pastor Elizabeth Crews of Westmorland Community Presbyterian Church will be officiating. Visitation will be held on October 13, 2016 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Frye Chapel in Brawley. Burial will follow the celebration of life at Riverview Cemetery in Brawley. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Brawley FFA to go toward the construction of the new Dave Hoskins School Farm Arena. Checks made payable to: Brawley FFA, Dave Hoskins School Farm Arena Account, BUHS 480 N. Imperial Ave., Brawley, CA 92227 C/O Michelle Taylor.
