ALLEGANY - Sister Concilia Flaherty, born Mary Barbara Flaherty, died Saturday (Feb. 18, 2017).She was born on Dec. 6, 1920, to John and Delia (Mannion) Flaherty in Roslindale, Mass.She was received into the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany at St. Elizabeth Motherhouse on Aug. 15, 1941, and professed her final religious vows on Aug. 16, 1948. For 76 years, Sister Concilia was devoted to the life and Mission of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany.Sister attended grade school at St. Augustine, South Boston, Mass., and St. Francis Xavier, Ronslindale, and St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Jamaica Plain, Mass.She graduated with a B.S. in education from Nazareth College in Rochester, and received credits toward her master's in administration at St. Bonaventure University. She was certified in administration for long-term care facilities in 1971.In 1978, Sister Concilia was named Northern Rhode Island CYO's Woman of the Year.For many years, Sister ministered in the field of education as a teacher at Holy Cross, Bronx, and Good Counsel, Rochester. She was both teacher and principal at St. John's School, Olean, and St. Ann School, Ossining. She also served as assistant principal and library assistant at St. Patrick School, Catskill. For three years, Sister Concilia was councilor/secretary/treasurer of Holy Trinity Province of the Congregation and later was secretary in the congregational office in Allegany. She ministered as the administrator of St. Francis House, Woonsocket, R.I. before retiring to St. Raphael Convent, West Medford, Mass. in 2000. She was the case manager at St. Joseph's Villa, Catskill. After 69 years of active ministry, Sister Concilia was welcomed home to retire at St. Elizabeth Motherhouse in 2009.Sister Concilia is predeceased by her parents, John and Delia; her brother John; her sisters Evelyn Bechtel and Theresa Woodsome; and her cousin, Sister M. Dorothea, O.S.F. She is survived by her brother, Francis X; and several nieces and nephews.A wake service is scheduled for Wednesday (Feb. 22, 2017) at 6:30 p.m. in the Chapel at St. Elizabeth Motherhouse, Allegany.
