Chief Fred L. Roemele Obituary

Oct 21, 1930 - Sep 12, 2017

This obituary is administered by:
Roemele, Chief Fred L., 86, passed away on Tuesday, September 12, 2017. He was born on October 21, 1930 to Mabel and Adolph Roemele. Fred was a member of the 1948 graduating class of Jeffersontown High School. After graduation, Fred worked with his brother, Lloyd, overseeing Myers Funeral Home, which was founded by his grandfather, Fred Myers. Enlisting in the United States Marine Corps in 1951, Fred served his country proudly for two years and received a Purple Heart for injuries sustained in battle on Christmas Eve 1952 during the Korean War. After his Honorable Discharge from the Marine Corps, Fred began his long and distinguished 52-year career in law enforcement. He joined the Jefferson County Police Department in October of 1954 and was promoted through every rank from Patrolman up to Assistant Chief. Fred retired from the Jefferson County Police Department on December 31, 1981 and was asked to return to his roots by Mayor Daniel Ruckriegel, Sr., in 1982 to serve as the Chief of the City of Jeffersontown Police Department. In 1992, under Chief Roemele's leadership, the Jeffersontown Police Department became the first nationally and state accredited law enforcement agency in the state of Kentucky, an accomplishment he was extremely proud of, with the Department continuing to receive many awards and accolades as it grew to double in size. Chief Roemele retired in 2007 from a career he loved. Over the span of his career, he received numerous awards and commendations, including a November 13, 1972 letter of bravery from then President Richard Nixon for his resolution of an armed hostage situation. He also received the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon. Chief Roemele was dearly loved and will be greatly missed. He is survived by his family, friends and extended law enforcement family. Cremation was chosen. Ratterman Funeral Home, Jeffersontown, is in charge of arrangements.
