Charles W. Viar, age 84, of East Tawas died on Saturday, March 20, 2010, at the Iosco Medical Care Facility in Tawas City. Charles was born on March 19, 1926, in Dyersburg, Tenn., to Nathan and Imogene (nee Tally) Viar. He entered the United States Army on July 31, 1944, and proudly served our country during three wars for 22 years, retiring as a master sergeant in 1968. While serving in the Army, Charles was stationed mostly at Fort Knox. However, he was stationed in Germany for a period of time and he was involved in the Army Battalion during D-Day. He met his wife, Ruth A. Opalla, after World War II in Germany and they married on March 19, 1948, which happened to be Charles' birthday. Charles and Ruth moved to the Tawas area in 1966. He spent two years with the East Tawas City Police Department and then, soon after, he purchased his family restaurant business, the Harbor Lights Restaurant. He owned Harbor Lights for some time and then he opened another restaurant in Oscoda called C-Vee's. Charles had many interests in life. He adored his wife, Ruth, his two daughters, Rio and Vee, and his granddaughter, Troye. Charles also enjoyed bowling, golf, horse shoes and fishing. He is survived by his loving wife, Ruth; his two daughters, Rio (Rick) Christian and Vee Lucas; his granddaughter, Troye McWilliams; and many friends. Per his wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service with full military honors will be held on Saturday, April 10, at 2 p.m. at Buresh and Kobs Funeral Home in Tawas City with Pastor Rob Nordin officiating.
