Carlena Simon-Miller1954 - 2016Carlena Simon-Miller was born on June 6, 1954 in Boise, Idaho. She passed away peacefully on April 1, 2016 after a long battle with Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD).The third of six children born to Marlowe Kinkade and Henry Simon, Carlena lived in the Treasure Valley throughout her life. She attended Boise schools and graduated from Meridian High School in 1972.After high school, Carlena married Daniel Campbell and had two daughters, Christine and Angela. Later in life, she found and married her soulmate, Brian Miller. The two had an amazing life together, remaining loving and steadfastly dedicated to one another through her prolonged illness.Carlena was a handful, a prankster with a quick wit. She was bright, funny, loving and charismatic. She loved the outdoors, but her passion was teaching. She was well-known among the friends of her daughters and often shared her knowledge of cooking, crafting, sewing and life in general with them. She opened her home to many, making all feel welcome and loved. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Boise State University and Master's degree in Curriculum Development from Northwest Nazarene University. Carlena taught elementary school in the Nampa School District, shaping young minds and hearts for many years as a teacher, Girl Scout Leader, and mentor.Carlena's grandchildren were the light of her life. She adored Tristen and Harmony from the moment each was born. She was preceded in death by her mother, Marlowe Brokate; father, Henry Simon; step-father, Bert Brokate; brother, Charlie; sister, Kathleen Simon; brother, David Simon; and sister-in-law, Brenda Simon. She is survived by her husband, Brian Miller; daughters, Christine Campbell-Davis (Warren) and Angela Campbell; sisters, Elnora Roderick and Lynette Roderick (Larry); brother, Joseph Simon; grandchildren, Tristen Grant, Harmony Russell, Hailey and Kelly Davis; and great-grandson, Kaiden Devecchio; along with many nieces and nephews.Dementia is a horrific disease - both for those afflicted and for those who love them. And, while our hearts are hurting and we miss her terribly, we find comfort in knowing that she's finally at peace, whole and happy again on the other side. The family would like to thank those who helped care for her during her illness, especially those at Valley View Nursing and Rehabilitation. The family will greet friends from 6 pm until 8 pm, Thursday, April 7, 2016 at Summers Funeral Homes, Boise Chapel. A memorial service will be held at 1 pm, Friday, April 9, 2016 at Summers Funeral Homes, Boise Chapel, with a reception to follow at the El Korah Shrine.Carlena leaves a great legacy of helping others, especially children - through which her memory lives on. In honor of this, we ask that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her name to the new domestic violence shelter at the Women's and Children's Alliance in Boise, Idaho www.wcaboise.org - "Donate Today".Memories and condolences may be shared with the family on Carlena's memorial webpage at www.summersfuneral.com.
