Carl Leslie Bennett87, of New Palestine, passed away on Friday, September 23, 2016. He was born on January 27, 1929 in St. Paul, Neosho County, Kansas to the late Alva Jacob and Mildred Ruth (Horton) Bennett. He served in the United States
Army for 30 years, retiring in 1978. Sergeant Bennett's Military awards include the Legion of Merit,
Bronze Star with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Joint Service award, two Army Commendation awards, and several awards of the Army Good Conduct Medal; Foreign Service awards including Vietnam. He earned the Parachute Basic Wings, completing his training in February 1954 at Fort Benning, Georgia. During his career, Sergeant Bennett served in Germany, Alaska, Turkey and Vietnam, plus several stateside assignments. Units he served were the 2nd, 3rd, and 11th Armored Calvary, 11th Airborne Division, MAAS assignment in Turkey, advisory duty with the 123rd Army United States Army Reserve Command, Indianapolis, IN. Carl's next job was as an Assistant Administrator of Fleet Management for the City of Indianapolis. He served 11 years with the city, retiring in 1990. Carl was a member of the Lawrence Masonic Lodge, a 32nd degree member of the Scottish Rite and Murat Shrine Temple. Also, Carl was a life member of the Lawrence
VFW Post 7119, a member of the American Legion Post 26 in his hometown of Girard, Crawford County, Kansas, member of the National Association for the Uniformed Services (NAUS), Armed Forces Top Enlisted Association (AFTEA).He is survived by his wife, Anneliese Katharina (Fuchs) Bennett; son, J.A. Bennett; and daughter, Shirley Jeanne (Bennett) Moore; 6 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Carl is also survived by several siblings. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Ursula Marianne Bennett Wray; and 4 brothers.Visitation for Mr. Bennett will be held on Tuesday, September 27, 2016 from 4 - 8 p.m. at Flanner and Buchanan - Memorial Park. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday morning at 11 a.m., also in the funeral home. Burial with Military Honors will take place in Memorial Park Cemetery.
