Calvin Travis Hull, MDJacksonCalvin Travis Hull, MD, 83, lovingly known as "Sonny", "The Dad", or "Gramps", died December 8, 2016, surrounded by his family. Visitation will be Tuesday, December 13th, 2016 from 12-2:00 PM. Funeral Services are scheduled at 2:00 PM at Parkway Funeral Home, 1161 Highland Colony Parkway, Ridgeland, MS. He was born on October 7, 1933 in Quitman, MS to Calvin Henry and Ruth Martin Hull. He took great pride in his upbringing in Clarke County and his hometown, Quitman. He played high school sports and also played trumpet in the school band. He received his undergraduate degree at Mississippi State University, where he also played trumpet in the "Famous Maroon Band". He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha social Fraternity and served as its President and Treasurer of the MSU Student body. While at "State", he met the love of his life, Carolyn Ann Williamson Hull, then a student at MSCW. He graduated from MSU in 1955 and he and Carolyn married, and he immediately joined the United States Air Force. As a pilot he served as a Captain flying All Weather Interceptors. His pilot training moved him to Hondo, Big Spring & San Antonio, Texas, Valdosta, Georgia, and Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, Virginia. He was proud of his USAF military service and looked forward to their pilot training class reunions. He received his M.D. degree from The University of Mississippi School of Medicine in Jackson, MS in 1962. His post graduate training Internship was at The University of Mississippi Medical Center specializing in Obstetrics and Gynecology. His OB-GYN Residency training was also at The University of Mississippi Medical Center from 1963-1966. While in med school, in his spare time, he played guitar, wrote his own funny lyrics to then popular songs and sang in a med school band with other doctors called the "Medics". Dr. Hull became a teaching Instructor for the OB-GYN department at UMMC in 1967 and then spent eight years as an Assistant Professor. In 1974, he began serving as a Clinical Assistant Professor for the OB-GYN department at UMMC for several years before joining a private medical practice specializing in Women's care.During his career of providing his patients medical care starting in the late 60's, he was also involved in leadership roles for many medical professional organizations and societies. He served as President of Jackson Gynesic Society, Secretary/Treasurer of MS OB-GYN Society, Secretary/Treasurer of UMC OB-GYN Association, honored member of the Phi Chi Medical Fraternity, American Medical Association, Mississippi State Medical Association and Chief of Staff for River Oaks Hospital, Chief of staff of the Woman's Hospital and medical privileges at St. Dominic Memorial Hospital. Dr. Hull was dedicated to his profession and thoroughly enjoyed practicing medicine. He was passionate about taking a personal interest and helping his patients. While he spent many long days and nights at the hospital delivering babies, he prioritized coaching his two sons' baseball teams in the early 70s for four years while they played Dixie Jr. baseball. He enjoyed following his sons' and grandchildren's sports interests. "Doc" had an outgoing personality and was an eternal optimist; he gave his best to every task he took on. He was loyal to those he befriended and a dedicated, husband as father. A voracious reader, who loved his many pets, and never ate a meal that he didn't enjoy, especially oysters of any kind. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Carolyn Hull of Jackson. He is also survived by his two sons and grandchildren, Phil Hull and wife, Christie Hull, and two sons Chris Hull and John David Hull of Madison. Calvin Hull and wife, Kim, daughter Meredith Hull and son Travis Hull, and step daughters Meredith and Jordan Guehlstorf of Dallas, Texas. Jesus Christ died on the Cross for our sins so that we enjoy eternal life. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated at the Highland Colony Baptist Church in Ridgeland, MS or the Batson Children's Hospital at UMMC.
