Col. Bruce Frederick Burt Sr., USMC (Ret.), of Gettysburg, age 84, passed away peacefully at his home Tuesday morning, Febuary 2nd, 2021.

Col. Burt was born Sept. 6, 1931, at home in Knox, Pa., the son of an oil well shooter. He was the first of his family of ten siblings to work his way through and graduate college, earning a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Otterbein College. Following graduation, he accepted a commission in the United States Marine Corps as a Second Lieutenant.

Col. Burt retired to Gettysburg after serving 30 years in the United States Marine Corps at various posts and stations and was a decorated Vietnam War veteran. Those military decorations include the Legion of Merit with Combat Distinguishing Device, the Bronze Star Medal with Combat Distinguishing Device, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat Distinguishing Device, and the Combat Action Ribbon.

He was an avid golfer and enjoyed many rounds with friends and family at the Gettysburg Country Club, Carroll Valley Golf, and Mountain View Golf Club. He also enjoyed working outdoors beautifying his property and was a loyal fan of all college basketball.

Col. Burt is predeceased by his beautiful wife of 52 years Evelyn Maxine; two sisters, Joanne Lerch and Nancy Newton; and two brothers, Edwin Burt and Thomas Burt.

He is survived by his two sons, Wayne F. Burt., and Col. John M. Burt, USMC (Ret), and his wife Lisa of Gettysburg; four grandchildren, Sean and Krystle Burt, of Fontana Calif., and Andrew and John Burt, of Los Angeles Calif.; four sisters, Shirley Myers, Patricia Ball, Judy Mielke of Titusville, and Jean Schell and her companion John Galford of Townville; and one brother Dr. Bruce C. Burt and his wife Patricia of Downingtown.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in his name to the American Cancer Society or the Wounded Warrior Project.

Bruce willed his body for studies in the furtherance of scientific medicine to the Humanity Gifts Registry of the State of Pennsylvania and will be interred at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery at a later date.
