Bill HofmannJuly 20, 1929February 18, 2017Bill Hofmann, age 87, passed away peacefully at Renown Hospital on February 18, 2017, with his wife, Marlis, and sons by his side.Bill was born on July 20, 1929, in Montreal, Canada. At age three, his family moved to Philadelphia where he went to school and spent his formative years, followed by 4 years in the Airforce. After putting himself through college at the University of Pennsylvania, he joined SKF Industries and was sent to Los Angeles, where he met his wife, Marlis, and later San Francisco. He then joined Bell Industries, leading the sales department of one of its computer products companies. Bill had a knack for sales and hard work, so in 1981 he and Marlis started their own company, Computer Components International. They started by manufacturing parts for the computer industry, eventually selling parts and products manufactured in Japan. The company grew and twice made the INC 500 list of most successful small companies in the United States.Bill and Marlis were married in San Francisco in 1973 and settled in San Mateo, CA. There, they raised two sons and continued to build their business. Bill retired in 1994 and moved to Reno in 2003. He adored his sons and was very involved in their lives until the very end. He will always be remembered as a loving, caring, and a generous husband, father, and grandfather, who had great wisdom, humor, and zest for life. After his sons married, he equally enjoyed and loved their wives and his four granddaughters. He always looked forward to their visits.Bill loved to golf and joked that the older he got, the closer he was to golfing his age. He treasured the time he spent traveling to Hawaii, especially the Big Island to where he often returned. Remembered for his wit, integrity, and a certain twinkle in his eye, he was the guy everybody wanted in his foursome for a round of golf, the guy everyone wanted to have a scotch with, and the guy everyone will miss. Bill is survived by his wife, Marlis; sister, Helen; brother, Charles (Naoko); sons, Jason (Erin) and Christopher (Ashley); and four granddaughters, Kylie, Maggie, Charlotte, and Lorelei.A celebration of life will take place at the Club at ArrowCreek on Sunday, March 12 at 2:00.
