LAURINBURG — Betty Jones "Mama Betty" Downer, 83, passed away on Aug. 28, 2015 at Scotland Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday at the Richard Boles Funeral Service Chapel officiated by the Rev. Bobby Dean. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery.
Betty was born on Nov. 11, 1931 in Robeson County, daughter to the late Daniel and Christine Caddell Jones. She was the devoted wife to the late Franklin Edward Downer.
She retired after many years of service with the Scotland County School System and Gill Street Grocery. She served as a member of Central United Methodist Church. Betty, lovingly call "Mama Betty or "Booba" enjoyed traveling, cooking for family dinners, and reading and loved caring for her grandchildren and others.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son Franklin Edward Downer, Jr. and sister Annie Neal Jones.
Betty is survived by her daughters Sharon Goodwin and husband Donald of Laurel Hill and Tammy Jacobs and husband Todd of Laurinburg, brother Dan Jones of Society Hill, South Carolina, sister Marjorie Beck of Laurinburg, two granddaughters: Cheryl Holland (Patrick Parker) and Suzanne Siharat (Souvat), five great-grandchildren: Dakota Holland, Eli Holland, Alyra Parker, Alaina Parker, and Lily Siharat, special friends Joyce Howell and Theo Barnes of Laurinburg, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 3-4 p.m. prior to the service on Tuesday at Richard Boles Funeral Service.
The family requests that memorial donations be made in Mrs. Downer's memory to Central United Methodist Church, Laurinburg, NC.
