Betty Jean Barnette Jenning
SmithmierMemphis, tnAge 90, passed peacefully at her home surrounded by loved ones on the morning of November 10, 2017. Betty was born on August 8, 1927 to Francis Riggins Barnette and Eldridge Guy Barnette. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Marshall Howell Jennings of 39 years and Reverend "Jake" J. L. Smithmier of 11 years. Betty's devotion to her family also included three passions in her life: her churches, Calvary Methodist Church and Aldersgate United Methodist Church, "Sweet Adelines" Barbershop Chorus and her positions at the University of Memphis as ticket manager in the University Center, which she held for 26 years. She was an avid University of Memphis fan. She enjoyed travelling with family and friends. She is survived by five daughters and two sons: Teresa Jennings (Bill) McMullin of Memphis, TN, Marsha Jennings Lewis Coldwater, MS, Sammie Smithmier Walker of Arlington, TN, Cheryl Smithmier Good of Collierville, TN, Lillie Smithmier (Rick) Thompson of Cordova, TN, Becky Smithmier Pace of Moscow, TN, Jack (Beverly) Smithmier of Lakeland, TN and Fred (Susan) Smithmier of Horn Lake, MS. She is also survived by 18 grandchildren: Jeff Wright, Bill McMullin, Scott McMullin, Tonya Lewis, Amy Lewis Smith, Marie Goodin, Wesley Walker, Sam Walker, Roy Good Jr., Tim Good, Ed Good, Dawn Good, Jana Gruber, Shane Smithmier, Chris Pace, Glen Pace, Corey Smithmier and Cassie Smithmier. She is also survived by 34 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Betty's favorite charities include: St. Jude or Church Health Center. Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 16, from 5-7 p.m. at Memphis Funeral Home, with the service to follow Friday at 10 a.m.
