Basil Stamboly 1924 - 2017UTICA - Mr. Basil Stamboly, 92, passed away on Saturday, April 8, 2017, at his home with his loving family by his side.He was born on November 19, 1924, in Utica, the son of the late Norman and Sadie Mardany Stamboly, and was educated in local schools. Basil was a sergeant in the US Army during WWII. He served in the Pacific Theatre, New Guinea and the Philippines. On July 2, 1949, he was united in marriage to Lois Sugarman, a blessed union of 66 years. Lois passed away on May 18, 2016. Together they owned and operated the Champlin Food Market, with their children, for forty years on Highland Avenue, in Utica, before retiring in 1988.He was a member of St. Basil's Holy Name Society and parish council. He was also a member of the Syrian-American Club and Utica Post American Legion 229. Basil enjoyed going to the casino, playing poker, gin and Texas hold 'em.Basil is survived by his children, Norman and Rebecca Stamboly, Christine Stamboly and Guy Yacobelli, III, Michael Stamboly and Todd Henry; two grandchildren, Bryan Stamboly, Sara and John Warner; and two great-grandchildren, Joslyn and Finnegan Warner; five sisters and one brother-in-law, Mary Murad, Evelyn Casper, Lorraine Tedesco, Eleanor Steppello, and Virginia and Louis DeGironemo; and three brothers, Ronald Stamboly, William Stamboly and Michael Stamboly; also surviving are many nieces, nephews and cousins. Basil was predeceased by his brother, Gabriel Stamboly.Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Funeral Mass on Wednesday at 10 a.m., at St. Basil Melkite Catholic Church, with the Rev. Saba Shofany officiating. The family will receive visitors at the conclusion of Mass. Private entombment will be in Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum.
