An accomplished pianist and church organist, lover of four legged as well as two legged creatures, and an inspiration to all in patiently enduring ever increasing health issues over many years, died on Monday, December 12, 2016, at home in Gaithersburg, MD. Barbara was born on May 1, 1931, in Elizabeth, NJ to Bernard C. and Katherine R. Harter, and she was raised in Washington, DC. She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1949, and from Duke University with cum laude honors in 1953. Until she was married in 1955 she worked at the National Security Agency, and while there she was crowned 'Miss NSA'. In addition to church work she taught piano to many students over the years.
Barbara is survived by her husband, Dr. Albert Zanner, of Gaithersburg, daughters Nancy Correll and Susan Zanner, of Gaithersburg, son-in-law Cory Correll, of Germantown, granddaughter Andrea Correll, of Bethesda, and adored dog, Soren.
There will be a visitation at DeVol Funeral Home, 10 East Deer Park Drive, Gaithersburg, MD on Friday, December 17 from 2 to 4 p.m. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, December 18 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 16420 S. Westland Drive and Route 355. Burial will take place on Monday, December 19, with information to follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society or to one's favorite charity.
