May 07, 1918 - May 16, 2017

This obituary is administered by:
Arlene W. Clark Dawson of Estes Park CO died at her home on May 16, 2017 at the age of ninth-nine years. She was born on May 7, 1918 in Selden, Kansas to Vernon Vershal and LuVina Rogers Clark. First and foremost, Arlene was a deeply dedicated wife and unconditionally loving mother whose warm heart and generous soul permeated all she did. She was patient and she was kind. Her heart was filled with love and concern for all of God's children. Arlene married Eugene Ellsworth Dawson on June 6, 1935 and together they created a family of six children; Eugene Ellsworth Dawson Jr (Mary) Aurora CO, Carlyle Clark Dawson (deceased), LoLita Dawson Pfeiffer, Midland MI, Edward Emerson Dawson (Judy) Gold Hill CO, Brent Clark Dawson (Jann) Lancaster CA and Deborah Dawson-Thomas (Larry) Denver CO. Arlene and Eugene's children gave them 14 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren all of whom survive her. Arlene was preceded in death by her parents Vernon Vershal and LuVina Rogers Clark, her brothers Loman Bernard Clark and Darrell Elwood Clark as well as her son, Carlyle Clark Dawson. Arlene graduated from Abilene High (KS) School and attended Kansas State Teacher's College (Pittsburg State University), Boston University and University of Colorado. Eugene and Arlene moved their young family to Boston where they pursued their education and then moved in 1948 to Pittsburg KS where Eugene was a professor and college administrator. Arlene became active in community affairs serving on the Planning Commission, President of Church Women United, Child Culture Club and a member of South Broadway Baptist Church. In 1957 the Dawsons moved to Denver where Eugene became President of Colorado Woman's College (later Temple Buell College) and Arlene served in a variety of roles on the college campus and in the Denver community. She was a charter member of the Denver Lyric Opera, charter member of the Friends of the Library of Colorado Woman's College, Denver Symphony Society Guild, President of the Board of the Florence Crittenton Society, Board of Education First Baptist Church of Denver, Altrusa Club, numerous PTA's and a member of Chapter Q, PEO of Denver. A new and exciting adventure came to the Dawson family in 1970 when Eugene accepted the Presidency of the University of Redlands. Arlene once again used her talents to serve the community in important ways which reflected her values. As the founder of the Friends of the Library, the University and its students benefited in innumerable ways from Arlene's love and dedication to the written word. Her various skills were also demonstrated by her officership on the boards of United Way, Red Cross and membership in Sigma Alpha Iota, the honorary music fraternity. In addition, Arlene was a member of the First Baptist Church of Redlands, University Women's Club and Contemporary Club. Upon retirement from the University in 1978 Eugene and Arlene moved to Estes Park, CO where they had purchased a home in 1970. Arlene was actively involved as a Friend of the Library, Chapter HF PEO, American Red Cross and the Historic Museum. During her 46 years of living in the mountains, Longs Peak and the Twin Sisters provided strength and spiritual guidance from sunrise to sunset and their shadows throughout the night. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that friends who wish to make a contribution in Arlene's memory consider Rainbow Acres, an institution dear to her heart. 2120 West Reservation Loop Rd, Camp Verde, AZ 86322. A private graveside service will be held on May 30 at Memorial Gardens in Estes Park, CO. "Life is eternal, and love is immortal; and death is only a horizon; and a horizon is nothing save the limit of our sight." Rossiter Worthington Raymond
