Arlene Ann Olson Obituary

Oct 14, 1916 - Nov 07, 2013

This obituary is administered by:
Arlene Ann Olson passed away peacefully November 7, 2013 at the age of 97 at Bethany at Silver Lake in Everett, Washington. She was born on October 14, 1916 in Grand Forks, North Dakota where she graduated from Central High School in 1934 and Aakers Business School. She moved to Seattle, WA in 1943 where she met her future husband, Melvin Olson, who was then a major in the US Army. They married in 1945 and moved to Everett where they created a loving home to raise their three sons. Arlene also helped raise two of her nephews following the death of her brother, Walt in 1964. In addition to raising the "boys" she enjoyed playing bridge with her many friends and volunteering for anything related to helping stray cats and dogs. She was especially proud of her work in helping start up the NOAH Animal Shelter on Camano Island, WA. She was an avid reader and curious about the world, always looking forward to discussing current events with her sons, grandchildren and friends. She was "Grandma O" to her three grandchildren and seven grandnieces. Later in life Arlene especially cherished bedside visits from her three great granddaughters. Arlene is survived by her sons, William Olson of Mukilteo, WA and Forrest (Margo) Olson of Kirkland, WA; grandchildren, Amy (Glen) Banks, Neely (Emilio) Beltran, and Gina Olson; nephews, Doug (Betty) Odlaug and Greg (Sharon) Odlaug; great grand-daughters, Claudia and Teagan Banks, and Addison Huston; grandnieces, Stephanie, Heidi, Angela, Carly, Kimberly, Cheryl, and Terri; and 13 great and two great-great grandnieces and nephews. Arlene was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Olson; son, Gary Harkness; brother, Walt Odlaug; and nephew, Pat (Selma) Odlaug. Although she will be greatly missed, her family and friends will forever cherish the many fond memories of their times with her. It is comforting to know that she lived a long, fulfilled life and passed peacefully when it was time. The family wishes to thank the staff of Bethany of the Northwest and Providence Hospice for their compassionate care of Arlene in her last few years. At her request there will be no formal memorial service.
