Anthony J. Schlaffer Obituary

May 10, 1931 - Sep 13, 2013

This obituary is administered by:
RACINE - Anthony J. Schlaffer, 82, passed away on Friday, September 13, 2013. He was born on May 10, 1931 and was son of the late Anna (Habelter) Schlaffer and James Schlaffer. On April 21, 1955, he married the love of his life, Jacqueline, at St. John Nepomuk Church. Tony graduated from Horlick High School in 1949. He then faithfully served his country in The United States Army for two years. He then worked at Belle City for several years. He then started at City Clerk’s Office in City Hall of Racine. He became Deputy City Clerk on January 1, 1970 and the City Clerk from January 1, 1978 until he retired in 1990. Tony enjoyed walking, exercising, traveling, dancing, bowling, gambling, and playing cards. In his later years, he also enjoyed meeting friends at a local Racine diner, Yuni’s Avenue Café, several times a week. Above all, Tony was a family man – he enjoyed spending time with his wife and his son. Tony leaves behind his cherished wife, Jacqueline Lou (Klein) Schlaffer (also of Racine), of almost 59 years. He leaves behind an only child, James Anthony Schlaffer, 53, of Racine (who became his daily, on-going caregiver until the very end). Tony came from a family of eight other siblings, all of whom have passed except his sister Anne Heidenreich, of Racine. He also leaved behind his sister-in-law, Shirley Carls, of Racine, and his sister-in-law, Joan Schlaffer, of California (married to his deceased brother, Joe Schlaffer). Tony also has many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held Thursday, September 19, 2013 from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home. A Memorial Service/private burial will be held at Southern Wisconsin Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, Town of Dover, at a later date. The family (at their discretion) has asked for money, in lieu of flowers, for them to use and to donate at their choice of charities. It is very important to Jackie and Jim to thank all the healthcare providers, including the various doctors and office personnel, the Wheaton-Franciscan nurses (making house calls), the Wheaton- Franciscan Hospice nurses and aides (in and out of their home) and the Wheaton- Franciscan hospital staff at the very end. They would like to thank Suzanne at the Veteran’s office (Racine) for all her help and consultations. Most importantly, Jackie and Jim would like to thank their closest friends for all their love, help, and support! MARESH-MEREDITH & ACKLAM FUNERAL HOME 803 MAIN ST.
