Annie Lea MurrellAbilene, TXAnnie Lea Murrell, 98, of Abilene passed away Saturday, February 4, 2017 in Bedford, Texas. Funeral service will be at 12:00 Noon, Wednesday, February 15, 2017 in the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel, 5750 Hwy 277 South, with Dr. Phil Christopher of First Baptist Church of Abilene officiating. Interment will follow the service in Elmwood Memorial park.Annie Lea was born on October 7, 1918 in Uvalde, Texas to Thomas A. and Mary S. Patterson. She graduated as salutatorian of Pelican (Louisiana) High in 1935 and then attended Texas Christian University & Harris Hospital School of Nursing, later graduating in 1938 as a registered nurse. She married Joe Bailey Murrell on February 2, 1941 and celebrated their marriage for more than twenty-eight years until his death in 1970.She worked for Hendrick Medical Center as a staff nurse, nurse supervisor and head nurse supervisor for more than twenty-five years. For the next twenty-five years of her life, she worked for Kanakuk Christian Camps in Branson, Missouri as the camp nurse for boys. She retired from nursing in 1999.Annie Lea was a former member of the Abilene Women's Club, the American Nurses Association and the Texas Nurses Association serving as President of District 15. She was also a long time member of First Baptist Church of Abilene.Annie Lea was preceded in death by her husband, her grandson Gregg Murrell, her five sisters, and her four brothers. She is survived by her son, Ron Murrell and his wife Jan of Southlake, TX; her daughters, JoAnne Johns of Fort Worth and Janet Justice and her husband, Jim Johnson of Lubbock; five grandchildren, Kim Brown, Karyn Johns, Stephanie Tedder, Jennifer Rankin, and Juli Ogilvy; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; and many nieces and nephews.
