Angelina Zarafonetis Pappas1926-2015Angelina Zarafonetis Pappas peacefully passed away on Tuesday, October 20, 2015. She was born on February 4, 1926 in Denton, Texas to Vassiliki Dalianis Zarafonetis and Nick George Zarafonetis. At a very young age, she moved with her family to Dallas, Texas where she attended public schools and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School. She then attended Southern Methodist University, graduating in 1946 with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration - quite an accomplishment for a child of Greek immigrants raised during the Great Depression. Thereafter, she was employed by Southern Methodist University until her marriage in Dallas on February 6, 1949 to Tom Harris Pappas, the love of her life and whom she had known all of her life. Immediately following their marriage, Tom and Angelina moved to Mt. Carmel, Illinois where they lived for 10 years. In 1959, they moved to Houston with their daughter where Tom joined his brothers in business, first with Pappas Refrigeration Company and, subsequently, with the Pappas group of restaurants.Angelina was known for her beautiful smile, her thoughtfulness and kindness to others, and her impeccable style and grace. Tom and she were members of Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral where Angelina participated in the Ladies Philoptochos Society and the Greek Festival. She was also particularly devoted to the Tanglewood Garden Club, having held numerous Board positions, including serving as its President in 1969. Other past philanthropic/civic activities included Church Women United and the Houston Grand Opera Guild.Angelina was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her sister-in-law Georgette K. Zarafonetis; and her brothers-in-law James H. Pappas and wife Mary, George H. Pappas, and Pete H. Pappas and wife Helen. She is survived by her daughter Diane Pappas Rogers and son-in-law Rex; her granddaughter Anna Rogers Schwartzel and husband Charlie; her granddaughter Christina Demetra Rogers; her brother, George N. Zarafonetis; and numerous nieces and nephews.The family wishes to extend its deepest gratitude to Dr. James Pool and Dr. Mohit Khera, and their respective nurses and staff, for their excellent medical care of Angelina; and to her caregivers Gloria Neal, Yolanda Fajardo, Faye Bowie, Mirosalva Wesley, Robert Malek and Sally Barnes for their devotion to, and loving care of, Angelina.Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with family which will take place from five o'clock until seven o'clock in the evening on Sunday, October 25th at Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive, Houston, where the Trisagion Prayer Service will begin at six o'clock. The funeral service will take place at one o'clock in the afternoon on Monday, October 26th at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 3511 Yoakum Boulevard, Houston. Immediately following the funeral service, burial via escorted cortege will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery, 1101 Antoine Drive, Houston. Serving as pallbearers are Angelina's great-nephews: H.D. Pappas, Tom Pappas, John Giannukos, Dimitri Giannukos, George Giannukos and James Pappas. Serving as honorary pallbearers are Angelina's great-nephews: Gregory Giannukos, Michael Pappas, Dikran Balabanian, Thomas Mattingly, Pete Stubbs and Nicholas Zarafonetis.For those so desiring, the family suggests with gratitude that contributions be made in memory of Angelina to the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 3511 Yoakum Boulevard, Houston, Texas 77006; the Tanglewood Foundation, 5757 Woodway Drive, Suite 160, Houston, Texas 77057; or to the .
