Amelia Lillian Smith (Amy), 92, formerly of Westfield, NJ passed away on February 7, 2015 in Kingwood, TX. She was born on March 25, 1922. Amy proudly served in the United States Navy for three years during WWII in the Radiation Department of the Naval Medical Center San Diego. She received her BS from Ursinus College; MS & PhD from Rutgers University; BSN and MSN-NPC from Seton Hall University. She began her career at Merck before she turned to teaching. She is Professor Emeritus at Kean University where she taught Biochemistry and Anatomy & Physiology for over 30 years and created the 'Dr. Amelia L. Smith Pre-Medical Annual Scholarship.' Amy has over 30 publications, including her pioneering research findings on the deleterious effects of steroids and the effect of starvation on cells. She served as President of the NJ Academy of Science for six years. After retiring from Kean University, she continued her teaching career at Seton Hall University, obtained her BSN and MSNP-C and subsequently worked at Trinitas Hospital for ten years. An avid musician (violin & viola), her love of music was born at the Settlement Music School in Philadelphia. She was a member of multiple orchestras (most recently the Summit Symphony) and chamber music groups spanning her life. She also hosted countless string quartets in Westfield where she lived for over 60 years. She was the wife of the late H. Ian Smith who passed in 1986. Also predeceasing her are her parents, Martin and Mary (Bronski) Neznek, sister, Olga King and brother, Stephen. Surviving are her two children, Gordon Smith (Eleni Taxildari) and Hilary Goll (Eugene); three grandchildren: Kevin Goll (Hillary), Karen Goll and Brian Goll; and two great grandchildren; Henry Goll and Georgia Goll. A resilient child of the Great Depression, Amy worked tirelessly each and every day of her life with relentless energy. May God grant her soul a well-deserved rest. Services will be on March 14, 2015 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Westfield, NJ.
