Alicia Magdalena SabalaOctober 7, 1921 - February 6, 2015Alicia Magdalena Sabala aka "Slim", age 93, of Chubbuck, Idaho, passed away peacefully at Ridgewind Assisted Living on February 6, 2015. She was born on October 7, 1921 in Shoshone, Idaho to Vicente and Maria (Camporredondo) Guisasola. She graduated from Shoshone High School where she excelled in basketball and swimming. It was during her participation in swimming that she met her future husband, John L. Sabala. They were married on April 21, 1946 in Twin Falls, Idaho.John and Alice built a log home in Ketchum, Idaho. They operated Sabala Cleaners until 1971. Alice also worked at several places during their years in the Wood River Valley including the Round House on Bald Mountain, First Security Bank, and Intermountain Gas. One note of interest is that she never interviewed for a job; employers always asked her to come work for them.John and Alice were very active in the community and organizations such as Papoose Club. Alice was very active in the Catholic Church as well. After retirement in 1983, they moved to Twin Falls, Idaho where they enjoyed playing tennis, golf, and entertaining kids and grandkids. They also traveled all across the country to visit family.After John's death in 1992, Alice moved to Pocatello. In 2011, she moved to Wilsonville, Oregon to be with her youngest daughter. In February of 2014, Alice returned to Pocatello.Alice was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Joe, Modesto and Louis; and her husband, John. She is survived by her children, John V. Sabala of Eagle, Colorado, Victoria Otterson (Chuck) of Lake Havasu City, Arizona, Valerie Allred (Dave) of Pocatello, Idaho, and Vanessa Wenigmann (Bruce) of Boise, Idaho, as well as 12 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 1 great, great grandchild.A Catholic Vigil Service will be held tonight, Feb. 10th at 6:00 P.M. at Downard Funeral Home, 241 N. Garfield Ave. The family will greet friends following recitation of the Holy Rosary at approximately 6:30 P.M. A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 A.M. at the funeral home. The family wishes to give a special thank you to Shaylyn, Courtney and Tia and the caring staff at Ridgewind.
