Albert Irving LeftwichAlbert Irving Leftwich, 92, passed away on December 5, 2016. He was born on December 11, 1923 in Larose, Louisiana to Fannie Sigur Leftwich and Albert Henry Leftwich. He was raised in Thibodaux and graduated from Thibodaux College (currently E. D. White High School). Upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Force and flew 33 combat missions as a member of a B-17 crew with the 483rd Bomb Group in the European Theater of Operations. During his 33rd combat mission over Berlin on March 22, 1945, Mr. Leftwich's plane was crippled by intense flak, forcing the crew to abandon the plane by parachuting. He was captured by the German Army and held as prisoner of war at Stalag Luft I, Barth, Germany. The POW camp was liberated by the Soviet Army in May 1945. Following discharge from the Army Air Forces, Mr. Leftwich attended the Southwest Louisiana Institute (currently the University of Louisiana at Lafayette), earning a Bachelor's Degree in Education in 1951. He taught at Golden Meadow High School, South Lafourche High School, and Galliano Junior High School from the 1950s through 1980s, during which time he earned a Master's Degree in Education from Nicholls State University. Al married Reeder Eymard in 1956, and they co-owned The Modern Shop clothing store for over 30 years. Beginning in the mid-1980s, they owned and managed Leftwich Real Estate (the former Gulftown subdivision). Over the years, Mr. Leftwich was an active member of the local chapters of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Lions Club, and Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where Reeder was organist and Al sang in the church choir for over 40 years.He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Reeder Eymard Leftwich, and their three children-Albert, Letty, and Lawton-and one grandchild-Anna Catherine Leftwich. Visitation will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Church from 0900-1100 with a funeral mass at 1100 on Saturday, December 10, 2016. Interment will be at the Cheramie Cemetery in Galliano.Falgout Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
