Al CloughEllstonAl Clough, 85, of Ellston passed away on Jan. 10, 2017. Service will be 11:30 am Saturday at the Rose Hill Cemetery, Lamoni. Visitation is 4 pm to 8 pm with family present from 6 pm to 8 pm. at Armstong Funeral Home, Mt. Ayr. He was born on Nov. 7, 1931, near Tingley to Fred & Dora Hill Clough. He grew up on a farm and enjoyed raising livestock and showing sheep at the fair. He attended junior college at Creston playing on the basketball team before graduating from IA State College with an Animal Husbandry Bachelor's degree. While there, he was a part of the Livestock Judging Team that won the 1953 American Royal Judging Contest. After graduation, he served two years in the U.S. Army stationed in Germany. Upon his return he worked for the IA State Extension Service as a 4-H Youth Agent.On Aug. 6, 1960, Al married Dorothy Dukeshier. The lived in Corning and Creston while he worked for Doughboy Feeds before moving to a farm near Lamoni. He enjoyed auctioning, judging livestock at fairs and working the ring at cattle sales. In the early 1970s he began raising Charolais Cattle. Later he raised Thoroughbred Horses which raced at Prairie Meadows and other tracks. He is known to many for the stories he told in his memoir, The Old Man on the Deck.Preceded in death by his parents; his wife; daughter, Carla; and sisters Aleeta, Althea, and Gean. Survivors include children Candee, Calvin, and Samuel and 5 grandchildren.
